Mini-itx server project - part 2

Back in August 2008 I announced the start of a Mini-itx server project, for one reason or another I have not purchased any parts for this project, therefore it hasn't really started, but this week I hope to purchase the first part.

Rackspace - Big news in cloud hosing

Yesterday Rackspace announce their purchase of Slicehost and Jungle Disk.

Rackspace hosted what they called a Cloud event to talk about their current Cloud hosting solution Mosso. Mosso allows users to setup site, this site can then then be easily scaled to meet demands. There are now a few similar systems, Media Temple Grid Service (gs), GoGrid, Amazon Ec2 etc each of these vary in price and features.

Mini-itx server project

Today I started a project. Well I'm not sure if you can call it started, but started looking into it.

I'm planning on building myself a server, I was going to get an old unwanted PC, but 1, it's slow and 2, it HUGE! So instead I am going to build a mini-itx sever.

Mini-itx motherboards are 17x17cm in size and many come with built-in processers at very low cost. For example the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard comes with a Celeron 1.2Ghz processor for under £40. All that's then needed it a bit of ram, hard drive and power supply.

(XV) Xserve-Virtual Mac OS X Leopard VPS server from Media Temple

Earlier this month Media Temple announced that in partnership with Apple and Parallels they will be releasing virtual servers based on Apples Xserve hardware and Mac OS X Leopard Server software.

As a big Apple fan and Web developer I am really excited about this and can't wait to get my hands on one. Media Temple are currently going through a Private Beta test on the system which I have signed up for, I just hope I get selected.

Millwood Online has moved yet again

Yet again Millwood Online has moved.

This site is no longer hosted with Media Temple. I was not happy with the 3 hours of down time in the first 20 days of may. I don't really mind my blog going down for that time, but via my web development company Spun Designs I have customers who would not be happy with that downtime.

I have moved

Last week I made the big step and went from a reseller account to a Media Temple (gs). I have been having great fun trying to transfer everything over and Millwood Online is the first site to go live. So if you notice any problems please let me know.

The (gs) from Media Temple was launched a couple of years ago and hosts many site across many servers enabling web site to expand and contract as the traffic changes. I have seen visitors double on here when a post gets a lot of Diggs, and this has caused a slow down, I hope this new server will help.
